Lesson 4
Hello Everyone!
Day for another lesson! Before we go into it, I would like to thank all of the new paid subscribers :D for contributing to this blog! It’s awesome to feel the support. If you would like to join the crew you can do it bellow.
So today we’ll be covering the next step: Present simple tense. I have already mentioned it here before, specially when in comparison with the present continuous. You can read it here. Do you remember the formula? Let’s test that :D Leave it in the comments bellow.
What you need to know:
Infinitives
differences between Present simple and continuous
After knowing these, we can now go forward.
Present Simple
Present Simple is a bit more complex in the measure that it has different endings and irregular verbs. Up until now, with the infinitives we didn’t have to worry about that.
Regular Verbs
Regular verbs are all those verbs where can create a pattern, meaning, all their endings are a pattern and we can predict the conjugations with the help of a table. Irregular verbs are all those that we cannot create a pattern of, so we need to memorize all of them individually.
Let’s have a look at the endings for regular verbs:
We can see here that the ending of the infinitive matters. Let’s consider one for each column: Andar (walk), comer (eat), and dividir (divide).
We remove the final two letters, which gives us: And -; Com- and Divid-
And then we add the ending according to the pronoun. For example:
I walk = And + o = Ando ;
You eat = Com + es = Comes ;
She divides = Divid + e = divide.
This is the pattern for all regular verbs. Now you ask why there is no -or and -ur? Well, first there are no verbs that end with -ur, second, all verbs with -or are irregular.
Irregular Verbs
As said before, we need to memorise these. To help you there’s a table bellow with the most common ones.
You can have access to these and other tables on our cheat sheet. You can download it for free here.
